Guest Lecture Robert Krulwich

26 Sep 2018

This weeks speaker in applications class was Robert Krulwich, one of the founders of Radiolab, on the topic of metaphors and creating pictures in the mind. He shared story about when he went to breakfast with powerful real estate developers who were able to look at delight the stock figures of the day. The men could construct narratives and stories just by looking at figures, however, not everyone can do this. Instead metaphors and pictures are powerful vehicles to communicate deeper thoughts.

Krulwich describes that the greatest minds use metaphors as tools such as when Isaac Newton tells the story about an apple falling on his head to talk about gravity.

Krulwich shared a drawing about math and how the world can be discussed in complex equations, but visuals are more powerful for most people. He urges that through the use of metaphors we can reach a greater audience.
